REPENTANT PUNTERS

CLIENTS OF WHITTA “I WON’T BET AGAIN’’ C Special to THE SUN.} CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. A spirit of repentance seemed to have chastened three men who were prosecuted in the Police Court to-day for making bets with Alfred Vivian Whitta, convicted in March of carrying on the business of a bookmaker in Christchurch. None of the men appeared in person, but letters were written to the court, which Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., remarked showed a repentant spirit. One man wrote promising never again to bet with a bookmaker, and that he had been tempted by the good odds to invest 10s. The Consolidated Fund’s revenue from the rai don Wliitta’s premises grows steadily, and including the fines imposed on Whitta and his assistants, amounts to £1.169.
