BOXING AND WRESTLING

TE AWAMUTU TOURNAMENT (From Our Oxen Correspondent.J TE AWAMUTU. To-day. A tournament under the auspices of the Te Awamutu Young Men’s Institute took place last evening. There was a large attendance. Auckland. Hamilton and Cambridge being represented. The president. Mr. James Oliphant, and secretary, Mr. A. A. Chittenden, arc to be congratulated on the success of the arrangements. Mr. Tennant College, of Auckland, professional welterweight wrestling champion of the Dominion, and secretary-organiser of the New Zealand Wrestling Association, acted as referee. The first half of the programme was confined to wrestling bouts. C. Pollard. of Auckland. 11.6. and A. Jackson, a Parawera native, 11.6, opened with three five-minute rounds, in which the former was declared the winner. T. Wenham and S. Jones, each 10.0, were the next to try conclusions. Wenham scored a popular victory. Por the heavyweight championship of the institute. E. Holmes and Cl. Dong met. Holmes at once got to work and had his opponent on the mat inside eight seconds. In the second round Holmes secured a fall irom a neck hold, making his victory

complete. The next bout was between R. Pilkington (Auckland), 9.7, and R. Wenham, 9.6. The first two rounds were even. The final round saw Wenham gain the decision over Pilkington.

The chief event of the evening was a challenge for the light heavyweight championship of New Zealand. The combatants were W. Bayne (Te Awamutu). 12.2. the holder, and A. Scarrow (Raetihi), 13.3, the challenger. After a fine contest, in which neither man gained a fall, the referee gave his decision in favour of Bayne on points, the verdict proving popular. Scarrow’s good, clean display was appreciated by the spectators. The latter part of the evening was devoted to boxing bouts and resulted as follows:—Paperweights (about 5 stone): E. Adams v. A. Dix.—The latter secured the verdict by a small margin. B. Kelly, 10.1. and T. Smith, 10.4.—T. Smith won on points. O. Craig, 8.11, and Faulkner (Otorohanga) 9.11, provided a lot of interest. Faulkner was cleverer in placing his hits, and won on points. W. Craig, 9.10, and Hollerton, 9.8, of Otorohanga, proved an exciting contest. The referee’s decision, a draw, was a popular one. An amusing bout was between Ali -Moses, of Parawera, and McCathie, of Cambridge. Moses retired with a damaged hand, victory going to McCathie. A willing bout proved to be between A. Graig, 9.3, and Onion, of Cambridge, 9.4. The former obtained the verdict.

The final bout of the evening was for the institute’s middleweight championship, G. Swain and A. Loomb. Tim latter had the advantage in the first round. In the second round Swain concentrated on the ribs, Loomb trying for the head. Both were tired in the third round, and the pace slowed down. Loomb obtained the verdict.
