HISTORIC CEMETERY
IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED The old cemetery on Albert Road, t Devonport, which is under the control i of the Anglican Church, has long been i an eyesore, but the church has never i been able to finance the cleaning-up of ! the area. A considerable part of the land is not used for burial purposes and proposals to be allowed to sell the land were fiegatived by the Crown. ! Now permission to deal with the land I is given, and at the same time some 1 money is available from other sources 1 for clearing-up purposes. The church ; is inviting the council to exchange a i piece of land at Narrow Neck (on ! which a church could be erected) for : the cemetery, the council to undertake | the car«* of the burial ground. Mr. J. Hislop remarked that tha ground was an historic place. A number of pioneers, soldiers in the Maori War, and Maori chiefs were laid to rest there. If the borough took over the j cemetery and removed all the fences j the whole piece of land could be grassed and made beautiful. The matj ter was deferred until the Anglican Church indicates what piece of land it ’ desires at Narrow Neck.
