LOSS TO FRENCH COLONY

MONSIEUR HENRI GILLET Through the death of AI. Henri Alarc Pierre Jacques Gillet, the French colony in New Zealand has lost its oldest member. AI. Gillet, who was born at Rochefort-sur-mer, France, on August 1, 1855, spent his declining years at his residence on the Great South Road, Auckland. Joining at the age of twenty the French colonial artillery, in seven years he rose to the rank of sergeant. He took part in wars in Senegal and in New Caledonia. AI. Gillet married a Brisbane lady and took up teaching the French language, holding positions at Alarton and at the Ladies’ College, Remuera. He was elected to the committee of the Auckland French Club. At Rocheford he was a neighbour of the well-known French author, Pierre Loti, a few years his senior. AI. Gillet’s pupils had great respect and esteem for their teacher. He is survived by his wife, but his only son. a telegraphist in the New Zealand Army, died at Gravenstafel at the age of twenty.
