No Praise for the School Inspectors

OBJECTION TO MOTION OF APPRECIATION QBJECTION to a motion of appreciation of the work of school inspectors in the Auckland district was raised at to-day’s meeting of the Education Board. In the board’s annual report was the following paragraph:—“The board wishes again to place on record its appreciation of the good work done by the senior inspector and his colleagues in connection with post-primary education.” When the adoption of the report was moved there was a hitch. Mr. J. D. McKenzie: The schools are behind, and who is responsible? I move that the “appreciation” be deleted from the report. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said that the board had already passed a motion of appreciation of its inspectors’ work. Mr. T. U. Wells: They deserve commendation for their important Work. The Chairman: The paragraph concerns the district high schools. Mr. McKenzie: It concerns all the schools in my opinion.

The Chairman: I think we all agree that they have done good work. Mr. McKenzie: Oh, I suppose so. The report was then adopted.

Asked after the meeting why he had moved the deletion, Mr. McKenzie said that it was a protest against so many schools having been marked inefficient.
