RACE FOR PEKING
NORTHERN FLIGHT TWO GENERALS ADVANCE BOTH WITH SAME OBJECTIVE By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyrigh Reed. 10.45 a.m. SHANGHAI, Tues. The Northern troops are preparing to evacuate the Honan province in view of the rapid advance of Genera’ Feng Yuh Siang eastwards. This means that the entire Northerners are retreating before the three-sided Southern drive, which is progressing despite the enormous casualties. The situation is virtually a race for Peking between Marshal Chiang Kai Shek with the Communist army from Hankow, and Feng Yuh Siang. In the event of further Southern successes, Ch«aiig Tso Lin .announces that he is prepared to retire to Mukden.
Anticipating possible disturbances in Northern China, President Coolidge proposes to transfer the United States Legation from Peking to some point nearer the coast. —A. and N.Z.
