COMMUNITY CLUBS MERGE THREEPENNY DONATIONS The latest development in the community bus movement is the decision of the Birkenhead and District Advancement Association to merge with the Suburban Transit and Social Club which is operating three community buses to Parnell Park. It was arranged that the General Transit Club would supplement the service provided by the Birkenhead Community Club if its single car broke down or any other emergency arose. Mr. Harold Schmidt, president of the General Transit Club, says that the community bus system would cut the cost of transit considerably. The object was to limit the donation for each trip to the smallest silver coin as maintenance costs and not profits were the sole aim. “I have a lot of buses coming from the South,” stated Mr. Schmidt, “four from Hamilton, and more have been arranged for.” By the merger the members of the Birkenhead Advancement Society are able to avoid personal liability at law for damage caused by their bus. Under the general transit scheme all the liability is on the president who, bearing all the responsibility, can only be removed by a unanimous vote of the committee of the club.
