“EARLY BIRD."

OVER THE HILL AT ELLERSLIE

PETER MAXWELL AND OMAHU GO WELL THIS MORNING

A glorious winter’s morning greeted a large crowd of spectators at Ellerslie to-day, and training operations were carried out under ideal atmospheric conditions. The hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper. Number one grass track was open for fast work, but there was very little of the extra fast variety done, and after 10 o’clock the hill was opened. Before breakfast Beau Cavalier did a round in 2.6 4-5, and pulled up well. He is in fine order. Archibald galloped at a strong threequarter pace for a round and a-half, coming home over the last four furlongs in 59 4-ss. Scaramouche finished at the end of six furlongs in 1.27 4-5. HOARIRI PLEASES Looking a picture of condition, Hoariri was sent over four furlongs in company with Antrim Boy, and he had no difficulty in disposing of him, despite the fact that Antrim Boy was being pushed along at the finish. They cut out the first furlong in 12 3-5, and the half mile in 52 1-5, a smart effort. Archeno left half a mile behind in 56, the last three taking 43 2-5. Sun Up and Bennanee went six furlongs in 1.23 2-5, the final three in 42 3-5. Both finished full of running after a useful work-out. Michael and Mountain Guide took 1.27 2-5 for the same distance. LONG WORK The two Great Northern Steeplechase candidates, Tuki and Dick, were given two rounds on the sand, and then galloped fast over the third circuit. Timed from the mile peg, they cut out the first quarter in 29, half mile in 58 2-5, and the eight furlongs in 1.55 1-5. At the end Dick was doing it best, but both were infusing plenty of dash into their task. It was a good wind up to their preparation. Town Guard and Jpdge’s Box finished together at the end of seven furlongs, which took them 1.38, the first two occupying 26 4-5, the half-mile 54 1-5, the pair coming home over the last three in 43 4-5, and were going very well at the post. Lomint was not unduly bustled to get to the end of six furlongs in 1.25, the first three being left behind in 42 2-5. DEGAGE AGAIN Ridden by H. Wiggins', Degage was again responsible for an attractive performance. Her mission was seven furlongs, and she ran to the end of the first two in 25 4-5, three furlongs in 40 3-5, half mile in 54 1-5, and she finished very strongly in 1.36 2-5. The final three furlongs took 42 1-5, but she could have gone faster if wanted. Maunga, Just John and Fireblight went a round in 2.2, the last half mile taking 57 2-5. WITH THE HURDLERS Anchor (H. Gordon), Ranga+ahi (R. E. Thompson), and King of the Air (Dunn) were sent over four hurdles on the course proper. The first pair gave a very fair display, but King of the Air scrambled over the first, and then finished at the second, when he fell. A similar task was ordered for Mangani (Mcßae) and Whet hine (G. Holland). the latter making a good showing. Mangani fell at the second obstacle, but was remounted and completed the job, jumping slowly. Elmestra (E. Warner) and Raiti Hike (R. E. Thompson) had the pace on all the way for four hurdles, and they acquitted themselves well, fencing cleanly. TRIED AGAIN Tall Timber (E. Garrett), Karamu (T. Chaplin), Black Cruiser (Mcßae) and Mount Marta (H. Gordon) started off over four hurdles. They cleared the first all right, but Tall Timber took off uncertainly at the second and caught the fence broadside on, and fell. Mount Marta set the pace for the others, and he took his fences fast and clean, finishing just behind Black Cruiser, who made a good showing. Afterwards Tall Timber was sent back to finish the task he had begun, and got over the two remaining obstacles slowly. Black Cruiser did well, and jumped splendidly. He is to race on the flat on Friday, and may be raced over the sticks on the last day.

GETTING BETTER Scot Free (Hastings) was far too good for Fair Abbey (T. Chaplin), and landed over the last hurdle of four several lengths ahead of his companion. The former was asked to cover a lot more ground, dnd this made his exhibition all the more satisfactory. Bretland early in the programme refused to look at the schooling hurdles, and was later tried in company with Ramblin’ Kid. This time they both scrambled over the first fence, and then as they went on they shaped in improved style. Ramblin’ Kid was in front at the end. THE BIG FENCES Prince Rufus (E. Warner) jumped the steeplechase fences on the flat, and although he ran the sod wall down rather badly he improved over the double and stone wall, making a satisfactory showing. Peter Maxwell (E. Warner) was much too good for Kendal (Mcßae) and Rayo (R. Morrison) in their effort over the fences on the flat and one the hill. Peter Maxwell jumped splendidly, never making a mistake, and he made many friends by his showing. It was one

of the best seen to date over the fences. Kendal tailed off after going half way, and was well back at the finish. Rayo did not last long, falling at the hurdle at the five furlongs, his jumping up to this being only fair. Peter Maxwell and Kendal, once over the stone wall at the foot of the hill, came on to the course proper and made the hurdle there their last jump. SHOWED IMPROVEMENT Omahu (R. C. Miles), Comical (PL. Burt) and Waioeka Jack (Bunn) were sent over the big fences. The first pair gave Waioeka Jack a start of nearly a hundred yards and he at once began to run down each fence. Omahu and Comical then came after him together and it was noticed that the latter went straight at the obstacles, although he was a bit uncertain at the second of the double. The next brush at the mile also unsettled him and ‘ he cleared the next fence, a hurdle, splendidly. The second hurdle, at the five furlongs, proved his undoing, and he clouted the top badly and fell, sending Burt on to his head, the jockey retaining his perpendicular attithde for quite a time before stretching his length oh the turf. Fortunately for him the turf was soft. In the meantime Omahu was giving a display entirely without blemish and on the flat the second time he had caught Waioeka Jack. The latter finished over the double, whereas Omahu took the water jump. Omahu must go well in the big steeplechase. It was remarkable that there were many falls this morning, and they nil occurred at the hurdle near the five furlongs. It is this same fence that upsets the horses in their races, for some good ones have failed to get over cleanly. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS A. McCormac has been engaged to ride Yoma and Alonsoa. G. Holland will probably ride Black Mint in the Cornwall Handicap. L. Pine will pilot Master Boon and Royal Blood. The Auckland rider, S. Tremain, will be riding at Ellerslie this week, after which he will enter hospital to undergo an oper- tion. KAMEHAMEH A'S MISSION If B. Price can reduce his weight to 9.0 he will have the mount on Kamehameha in the Great Northern Hurdles. Should Price not be able to get down to that weight, KamFaameha will not be a runner in the big event, but will be reserved for the Penrose Hurdles, in which he is to carry 9.0. Price will also have the mount on Edifice in the Hunt Club Hurdles. h
