Express Late.—Owing to engine trouble south of Marton the first express from Wellington did not arrive in Auckland until 7.50 o’clock this morning. She was an hour behind her schedule time.
Speed Typing.—ln a typewriting speed contest Miss Mitchell, an English typiste, won the High Speed Cup. Miss Mitchell was second to Mademoiselle Piau in the championship for typing from copy. The winner’s speed was 98 words a minute.
Vital Statistics.—There were 38 births, 18 deaths, and 20 marriages in Hamilton during May. The figures show a decrease of seven births compared with May, 1926. the deaths an increase of three, and the marriages an increase of one.
Police Curbing Strikers.—A squad of police who were sent to prevent possible violence at the mill strike at South Johnstone, Queensland, arrived in civilian clothes. They carried arms and ammunition hidden in parcels. The police are patrolling the farms, in consequence of reported threats by the strikers to set fire to the cane fields.
North Auckland Topography.—Mr. J. A. Bartrum and Mr. F. J. Turner. Auckland geologists, recently visited the North Auckland district to examine the topography of that part of New Zealand. Last night Mr. Turner detailed his trip to an interested gathing at the Auckland Institute, when he declared that the North Auckland well repaid a visit by a geologist.
