BOWER BIRDS

These are interesting little birds, about the size of the thrush, and are found in Australia. They vary much in colouring, some being quite plain, and others bften beautiful. They are called Bower Birds because they, build a bower or “run,” as it is often called, in which they play together. They do not live in it at all, for they build quite an ordinary nest for this purpose. These bowers are very carefully put together, sticks and long grass being used in their construction, and when finished they form a sort of covered passage, usually about three feet long, and in this these peculiar birds play all day long, running in and out and chasing each other round and round it. They work very hard to make it pretty, too, and collect all sorts of coloured stones, shells,, or brightlycoloured feathers which other birds may have dropped on the ground, with which to decorate it.

The greater part of poetry is about the stars and very justly, for they are themselves the most classical of poets. R..L.S.
