MOUNT ALBERT COUNCIL

An ordinary meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council was held last evening. The mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes presided over a full attendance of members.

A gift of £2 2s was made to the funds of the Workers’ Educational Association.

The registrar of electors wrote stating that difficulty had been experienced in. locating electors residing in the New North Road owing to the duplication of some of the numbers. The consecutive numbering of the road throughout would end the present confusion.—lt was decided to re-number the houses from the intersection of Dominion Road with New North Road commencing with No. 157 at Glenmore instead of No. 1, on the one side, and No. 108 instead of No. 2 on the other. The portion formerly known as Eden Terrace is now numbered 1 to 155 and 2 to 106.

Ratepayers of Cricket Avenue wrote complaining of the bad condition of the roadway which has never been permanently paved.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Complaints regarding the noise from a factory in Finch Street were received from residents of the locality. Following upon a lengthy discussion it was agreed to instruct the council’s solicitors to prosecute under by-law 82. In reply to a request from the council for an augmented tramway service to Mount Albert during rush hours, the manager of the tramways department, Mr. A. E. Ford, wrote advising that the matter was receiving attention and that if it is possible the request would bo granted.—The clerk was instructed to write asking for further details. The annual report of the superintendent of the Fire Brigade stated that 53 calls were received during the year. The estimated damage to property was approximately £1,490. An average of nine firemen had attended each alarm. Ten additional alarm boxes were installed and a further 10 are ready for allocation. Several members of the brigade had resigned in the course of the year, and were replaced by new men. The strength of the brigade now stands at three officers and 12 men. Notification was received by the council that bitumen had been left lying in Edendale Road by contractors to the council. —It was resolved to ask the owners to remove the material. A letter was received from the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board with reference to the proposed extension of the branch sewer, No. 8. The board stated that it was not yet able to advise definitely as to when tenders would be called.
