QUIET ELLERSLIE

LITTLE DOING TO-DAY LATEST NOTES FROM HEADQUARTERS There was very little doing at Ellerslie this morning in the way of fast work, and but for a couple of spins over the schooling hurdles the work was generally uninteresting. Number two grass and the sand were the tracks available, the former providing heavy going. To-morrow morning should be much more interesting, with the hill again open. Before breaktast Luxurious beat Rina Mangu and Star Comet in a bout over six furlongs, run in 1.24 2-5, the first two taking 27 4-ssec. Marble Boy finished over the last three of four furlongs in 43 2-ssec. The Dansant came home comfortably from the half-mile peg in 55 2-ssec. without being extended. Oration had White Bird as a companion in a gallop over six furlongs in 1.24, the last half-mile taking 55sec. HURDLER’S PACE Anchor, with a good pull in the weights, showed too much speed for the hunter Lupineel over half a mile in 54 2-ssec. Omahu was given good strong work over two rounds. He ran the first six furlongs in 1.28, and on the next circuit was still going well. There is no getting over his condition. Royal Mint and Golden Krist went seven furlongs in 1.40, the former pleasing most. He is partial to soft tracks. Scot free covered a round in 1.55 4-5, the last seven furlongs taking 1.42 4-5. Comical and Tin Whistle took 28sec. for the first two furlongs and did five in 1.10 2-5, the pair continuing another round at half-pace. Harbour View left half a mile behind in 55 2-ssec. OVER THE STICKS Enare (Stanway) and Just John (Eager) were associated in a spin over four schooling hurdles. Enare rapped the first, and then negotiated the remainder all right. Just John seems to have a natural aptitude for jumping, for he took every obstacle in his stride. He was raced over the sticks at Wanganui and gave only a moderate display. Stellatour (A. Driscoll) was indulged in the same task, and jumped evenly throughout. This was A. Driscoll’s first 'appearance as a rider over the obstacles, and lie shaped well. TRACK JOTTINGS Included among the latest arrivals at Ellerslie are Indian Sage, Black Mint, Nadarino, Whetuhine, Black Cruiser and Maungani. Cantab, Te Kara, Te Koroke and Llandudno are due on Thursday. Included in E. Stanway’s mounts are Syndicate and Rahepoto. H. Wiggins will pilot Royal Mint, Sun Up and Antrim Boy in their respective engagements.

; a handsome two-year-old by Man-o - I War from Air Raid, owned by the lady ! enthusiast. Mrs. Sweetapple. and on j his excellent looks is quite at home in I the Shaw picture. No wonder the | Ellerslie trainer has a perpetual smile | that seems to act as a nightmare with some people. The Sapling Stakes The two-year-old son of Matchlight j —lmperial Tan. still continues to rule j a firm favourite for the New Zealand ! Sapling Stakes, which takes place on June 11 at Ashburton. If the Gisi borne filly Enewah makes the trip, she | will add interest to the event, while one or two other youngsters are reI ported to be showing promising form. Comes of Good Family j There are some Matchlight young- | sters engaged in future classics, whose breeding would suggest big possibilities and among these can be mentioned a colt from Bright Alice, dam of Kohara and other high-class performers, who will probably be the elect of Mr. R. M. Morten, for next season’s Derbies. The Canterbury sportsman dearly loves to win some of the big classic events of the Dominion, and was successful in 1923-24 with Taurekareka. in both Derbies. All going well his trainer. J. Bryce, will make a big bid to lead in another Derby winner. Ready to Pack the Bag D. Withers is keeping the trotter Frisco Beau and pacer Silk Thread up to the mark, and it is quite on the cards that Mr. J. R. McKenzie’s pair will compete at Alexandra Park next month. The Tip Frisco—lrene Beau gelding won at the New Brighton Royal meeting, and the Bingen Silk —Handsome Jane horse was returned a winner on the second day of the Wellington autumn fixture. Turned Down The Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association has not been idle in view of the approaching Trotting Conference, and several remits emanated from this organisation, have been handed to various clubs to sponsor. One, “That a horse be considered a maiden performer by the handicapper until it has won a race, was handed to the Forbury Park Club to champion, but after dealing fully with the subject, it was decided not to bring the remit forward. Few if any will doubt the wisdom of the Southern club’s action, and it is to be hoped their action will not result in an accusation of “ignoring” the owners and trainers. Can Carry Weight Wenlo, a roan gelding by Cathedral Chimes from Roscraig has been showing threatening form of late and his connections are quite prepared any day now to pay a visit to the pay-out windows. He is partial to the weight on top and on this account may Imve a big army of friends at Canterbury Park this week. He ran the speedy Nelson McElwyn to a head at Forbury early this month. Which Will It Be? Golden Devon, who has been at Christchurch headquarters since the Easter fixture, is said to have improved in staying ability, and on this account the Coaster is being given a good show in some quarters for the big heat at Canterbury Park this week-end. The Great Audubon gelding is also handicapped in the harness mile, being on a 2.11 peg, and judging by his recent displays, Alboni’s chestnut will be more suited by the shorter distance. A Slim Chance In connection with the two horses, Bankhead and Quality, called off in the Advance Handicap at the recent meeting of the Oamaru Trotting Club, it is reported that further inquiries are being made and holders of totalisator tickets on either of those two horses might be wise to hold the same in the meantime. Changing His Gait Cannonball, a four-year-old gelding by Wildwood Junior from Madam Shaw owned and trained by Len Pascoe at Reefton, showed good form last year as a pacer and was heralded in certain quarters as the equal of Golden Devon. He certainly demonstrated ability to go fast, and got some stake money, where the gold is won from the earth. He failed in Greymouth after being specially labelled and has not raced since. During the interval Cannonball has been put to the trotting game and is entered for the unhoppled events at Canterbury Park. Machine Gun Ready For Action The Australian-bred Machine Gun has trained on the right way since he won the Timaru Cup and will probably be brought to Auckland by R. Berry for the June meeting. Southern horses usually do well at the local fixture, and next month will probably prove no exception, judging by the way the local contestants are being hampered in their training operations. Not To Be Hurried A two-year-old colt by Logan Pointer from Teresa Sylvia has joined F. G. Holmes’s stable. He is a natural pacer, and shows much promise, and will be allowed plenty of time to develop. This would suggest that the colt will be allowed to drop out of his New Zealand Sapling Stakes engagement.
