STARRING MAE MURRAY Audiences seldom realise the difficulty presented in the photograph ins of what seems a simple bit of business, especially if the effect is obtained accurately. Little do they realise that an actor carrying a lantern through a scene presents a more difficult problem to the camera man than the photographing of a parade of soldiers. William Daniels, who photographed “ Alters of Desire,” with Mae Murray in ffio star role and Conway Tearle in the featured male lead, had an especially trying scene to photograph during the production. The scene showed fearle carrying a lantern to light the Wa y for De Witt Jennings and Richard through a series of dark rooms. ~Jnly enough light was required to «how an outline of the men, yet the lantern had to light up a portion of their taces as an ordinary lantern would, the light generated by a small lantern 'hd not affect the film enough, so a series of spotlights placed at different TK*** es Allowed the men throughout ineir walk, and as the lantern was moved the lights followed them, giving me proper effect. It was only after many hours of work on the part of the lectricians, camera men and the director that the effect was finally obtained.
