RICHMOND CRUISING CLUB
PRIZE-GIVING TO-NIGHT The splendid progress made by the Richmond Cruising Club since its regeneration two years ago is indicated by the fact that the equivalent of over £IOO in cash and trophies will be handed over to-night to the owners of winning boats for the 1926-27 season. Ahlers, of Devonport. Mr. Ahlers. who is well known in the natatorial section of our sport, did not quite get the success he deserved with Nyria, but let us hope that his new ship will fulfil expectations. In conversation with Messrs. Hume and Creagh, the recent purchasers of the well-known first-class keel yacht Thelma, I learn that they intend tc start work on her immediately. As keenness is their keynote, they are leaving no stone unturned to be down early in the new season. A casual glance at the Thelma as she stands in the cradle will convince that her owners have plenty of hard work in front of them. The 15 horse-power Gardner engine which brings the craft in the category of the auxiliaries, will be retained, but this will not debar her from racing. The 26-foot mullet boat Starlock. the 22-footer Marie, the 20-footers Lorna, Waipu and Allies, and the X class 14-foot *r Shirley are also reported as having changed hands recently. A CORRECTION In this column last week a reference was made to the “14-foot restricted class” as being more suitable for the Sanders Cup contest than the X cl iss 1 1-footers. This was a typographical error, and should have read, “18-foot restricted class,” as it was intended to refer to pat.kis of a type similar to the M boats. DEVCNPORT AFFAIRS Considerable congestion is being experienced at the Devonport Club’s hauling-up i-ite, owing to lack of adequate space The position should be somewhat relieved, however, by extra levelling-off on the section, which it is hoped to carry out in the near future. A new slipway is also on the cards, and a decision is expected at the City Council’s meeting to-morrow night. Satisfactory progress is being made on the club’s new home, and the paint should be on inside the next three weeks. FOR A CLUBHOUSE Though the Akarana Club promoted a successfu art union about twelve months ago for the purpose of raising funds to build that great necessity, a clubhouse, 1 ardly sufficient was forthcoming to meet the altered conditions. With the idea of supplementing the fund, the club has booked space at the coming Winter Show. Let us hope it will receive deserving patronage. Owing to the popularity of the Akarana Club’s; dances this season, the social committee decided last evening to run three extra dances on Saturday nights in the Power Boat Shed. King’s Drive, on July 9, August 6. and September 17. These are in addition to the series of dances now being held in the Masonic Hall.
