The teredo, or ship worm, which does great damage to ships, piers and wharves has in its head small hard shells which form a drill powerful enough to bore into the hardest woods. A sword, with a hilt of solid gold, and with the word “Proved” on the blade, was unearthed in a sandpit at Ballinarnuck, near Longford, Ireland. It is supposed to be 200 years old.
