NEW DIAMOND FIELD
FABULOUSLY RICH Diamonds valued at almost a quarter of a million have recently been taken to England from a new field in the Orange river area of South Africa that will not be opened up for the present. An untold treasure in gems will lie buried there indefinitely because the diamond syndicates fear the market would be flooded and ruined should the rich pockets be exploited. Hitherto the presence of this field has been kept a secret because it was feared there would be a great rush to the region and hundreds of diggers would perish in the surrounding desert, which is remote from any settlement. Recently a syndicate acquired the rights, but they have decided to seal up the territory following the market flurry caused by the Grasfontein rush. The Grasfontein field pales into insignificance beside the wealth along the Orange river, it is said. The exact location of the deposits is now known only to the syndicate and the Government, and a handful of private diggers who have been forbidden to prospect in the district.
