The following were the results in the county cricket matches that ended today:— Playing against Somerset, in their first innings, Essex made 420 (Russell 117, Morris 143, Douglas 61). Somerset in the first innings made 389 (Young 103, M. Lyon 64). The match was abandoned owing to rain. Essex won on the first innings. Playing against Hampshire Yorkshire in the first innings made 360. Sutcliffe made 57, Macaulay 53. Gross took five wickets for 53 runs. In the second innings Yorkshire made 161 for one wicket and declared. Sutcliffe made 81 not out, Oldroyd 58 not out. In the first innings Hampshire made 214 (Brown 51, Mead 75 not out) and in their second innings 182 for three wickets (Brown 90). Yorkshire won on the first innings. Playing against Cambridge University, Notts in the first innings made 311 (Carr 50, Walker 71, Turner 69), and in the second 304 for eight wickets (declared). Whysall made 119, Flint 51. Longfield took six wickets for 90. Cambridge in their first innings made 338 (Judd 73, Robins 96, Machin 50), and in the second 151 for three wickets (Judd 62 not out, Robins 54 not out). The match was drawn. For Middlesex against Gloucestershire Hendren made 106, Hearne 245 not out. Durston took six wickets for 61. Middlesex won. For Lancashire against Glamorgan, Tyldesley took four wickets for 16 runs. Lancashire won. For Warwickshire against Northants Kilner made 125. Durnell took seven wickets for 29, Warwickshire won. For Leicestershire against Sussex Geary took five wickets for 45 runs. Leicestershire won. Rain interfered with several of ti% matches.' —A. and N.Z. —Sun.
