TUKI AND DECAGE

MAKE MANY FRIENDS TRIALS AT ELLERSLIE THIS MORNING’S TRACK WORK Fine weather prevailed at Ellerslie for training operations, and some very interesting work was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators. The hill was open for the steeplechasers, and the hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper, these being freely availed of. The tracks were heavy, and No. 1 grass, which was open for galloping, was very slow. A feature of the morning’s operations were the efforts of the Cornwall Handicap candidate Degage, who did a smart seven furlongs, and Tuki’s splendid display over the big fences on the flat and over the hill. There was only one gallop recorded before breakfast, that being Gala Day, who ran six furlongs in lmin 27 1-5 sec. All the gallops timed were done on No. 1 grass unless otherwise stated. SPRINTER GOES WELL

Sun Up conceded Archeno three lengths’ start from the fiye furlongs, and then beat her home. The first quarter took 27 4-ssec, and the full distance lmin 8 2-ssee. Sun Up’s time would be much better than that, and he was going easy at the end. Bennanee moved very freely in a spin from the six furlong peg, and after leaving the first two behind in 27 3-ssec, completed his task in lmin 23sec. The last half-mile was cut out in 55 2-ssec. It was a nice workout. Town Guard was doing it nicely on the outside of Judge’s Box, in a bout from the six furlongs, the time for the first two being 29sec, and then they finished strongly over the last four in 54 2-ssec, the full distance occupying lmin 23 3-ssec. Danae hit out well in a six furlong flutter run in lmin 24sec, and Lomint did a similar task in lmin 26 3-ssec.

DEGAGE GOES FAST Ridden by the light-weight H. Wiggins, the Cornwall Handicap candidate Degage was responsible for a fast seven furlongs. She cut out the first three furlongs in 40 3-5, and then completed her gallop in 1.35, the last six furlongs being done in 1.21 1-5, and the last half mile in 54 2-5. Up the straight the rider had a good hold of her, and it appeared as if she could have done better time had her -rider wanted. Ballymoy 11. gave Nucleus a start in five furlongs on the sand, and was upsides with her at the finish ,the time being 1.7 4-5, the first couple taking 26 2-5. Passionate was going better than Killute and Cawnpore from the seven furlong peg, running the first four in 57 3-5, and the full distance in 1.40 1-5.

VETERAN WELL Ngata was running along very freely at the end of six furlongs, doing the first two in 27 2-5, and the full journey in 1.23. He looks well. King of the Air was of little use to Master Doon in a round, the latter covering the circuit in 2.10 2-5, being hard held up the straight. THE HURDLERS Zircon (E. Garrett) and Royal Form (L. Coleman) were companions in a spin over four hurdles. The latter made the pace, and although he did not jump so well as Zircon he was a couple of lengths in front as they rose at the last obstacle. They were then sent over the big fences on the flat, Royal Form fencing nicely. Zircon, who was making his debut, flew the sod wall, and was a bit uncertain at the water jump. He rose very high at the stone wall, but for a first attempt it was a splendid showing. Archibald went over four hurdles on his own, and gave his usual display of good and fast hurdling. S. Henderson, who rides him in the Great Northern Hurdles, was in the saddle. KAWINI’S JUMPING

Kawini (G. Holland) and Karamu (R. Olive) were associated in once round over hurdles. The former went very smoothly throughout, and with five furlongs to go he drew away from his companion. Kawini gave a splendid showing, finishing the round in 2.20, while Karamu took 2.23 3-5. The latter lost ground at each obstacle, the Great Northern favourite outjumping him badly. Day Bell (E. Warner) was accompanied by Kamehameha (B. Price) in a similar task. They kept together most of the way, although Day Bell lost a bit of ground at the hurdles at the six and five furlongs. The latter ran up to Kamehameha crossing the top, and tviey came over the last obstacle together on terms in 2.20 4-5 for the round.

GREAT RECOVERY Next to go over the sticks were Tall Timber (E. Garrett), Rahepoto (E. Stan way), Lord Bruce (Moore) and Comet King who started from the six furlong peg to negotiate four hurdles. At the first Comet King shot his rider on to his neck, but Burgess made a remarkable recovery and was quickly in the saddle again. Tall Timber finished in front, after not being at home over the first two fences, while Rahepoto, who also went well, was right up. At intervals were Lord Bruce and Comet King. Anchor (Moore) had to wait for Lupineel (R. E. Thompson) in a spin over four hurdles. The former did what was asked of him, but Lupineel was not seen to advantage. He is better over the bigger fences. Clockwork (B. Price) and Fair Abbey (E. Garrett) were paired in a bout over the sticks. They did not go very fast, but they jumped satisfactorily. It was a fair performance on the part of both. OVER THE HILL

Fireblight (H. McSweeney), Tuki (R. E. Thompson), Passin’ Through, and Rayo (S. Robinson) started from the sod wall, and then continued for a round over the hill, finishing over the double and the stone wall. Tuki and Passin’ Through went very well, the former jumping splendidly, and at the finish he was doing it better than the Taranaki gelding. Fireblight could not foot it with them, and was several lengths behind at the finish. She jumped well, but slowly. Rayo gave a disappointing display, being very slow at his fences, and at the water jump he baulked, and later got over unwillingly. J Tuki’s display gained him a lot of friends for the Great Northern Steeplechase. COMICAL IMPROVES

Omahu (R. C. Miles), Comical (A. H. Burt), and Maunga (Griffiths) were given a similar task. Omahu went to the front from the start from Maunga and Comical, and fenced splendidly. At the stone wall at the foot of 'the hill Omahu hit hard, and dislodged his rider, and Maunga came home alone. Omahu was giving a great showing up to the time he lost his rider, and the incident would not lose him any of his admirers. Maunga jumped fairly well, and got round safely without accident. Comical took the first fence, the sod wall, splendidly, but he just cleared the water jump and the stone wall, while the brush fence (similar to the obstacle that he didn’t like at Wanganui) saw him scramble over. The two next were hurdles, and he cleared them in good style. He baulked at the first fence on the hill, and then got over at the second time. Comical also

refused at the next, and was then walked down the hill, starting at the foot and clearing the five fences on the flat in much improved style. Te Tahi (Hastings), Miss Lucca (B. Price), and Glendowie (H. Tinker) started off on the flat, going over the double and stone wall, where Te Tahi was pulled up, Glendowie jumping fairly well on the round. Miss Lucca ran off at the sod wall on the flat the second time.

RIDING ENGAGEMENTS R. E. Thompson has been engaged to ride Rangatahi in the G.N. Hurdles, Tuki in the G.N. Steeples, Elmestra in the Penrose Hurdles, and Raiti Hike in the Hunt Club Hurdles. He will also pilot Lupineel in the Hunt Club Cup on the second day. Included in C. Browne’s mounts are Lady Arch and Income. R. Reilly will ride Luxurious and Gold Jacket. R. McTavish, Te Kara, Kingfield, Te Koroke and Manly. E. 'Warner will be on Day Bell, Peter Maxwell, Prince Rufus. W. H. Jones rides White Bird and Kyngzone. ARRIVALS The latest arrivals at Ellerslie are Oration, Royal Mint, Passin’ Thorugh, Sir Kay, Rayo, Just John, Danae and Weekne. Hipo is expected to arrive during the week. W. Donaldson’s team —Hoariri, King Smock, Lady Arch, Adjuster and Antrim Boy—are to arrive from Thames to-morrow. SEVERE INJURIES When Dimlight over-reached at the first fence of the double while schooling on Thursday morning, he very nearly severed a tendon of the near front leg, and it is understood that he will not be able to race again. Houga Hika, who has been unsound off and on for a period, has broken down, and will receive a lengthy spell.
