TOWN HALL CONCERT
municipal band A largely-increased attendance was te^ ure of the municipal concert at the Town Hall on Saturday evening, when a well-selected programme of pleasing variety was presented bv the Municipal Band under Mr. Christopher Smith. “Beethoven’s No. 5 Symphonv in C Minor, Op. 67,” a piece taking 35 minutes to Play, was the principal contribution of the evening. Though a difficult number, it was hand lee with a fine conception of its requirements and proved a most enjoyable and v°rv interesting offering. Other band numbers were “A Calm Sea” (Mendelssohn;. Rimsky-Korsakoff’s “Scheherazade” except, “The Young Prince and the Princess. Cumberland’s Dun” march, and Glinka's bright fantasia, “Komarinskaza.” A nicely-selected programme by the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, was also accorded a very appreciative hearing. The organ items were“Concerto No. 4” (Bach), “Romanza and Allegretto” (Wolstenholme), “Air with Variations and Finale Fugato” (Smart), "May Song and March” (Sgambati), "Allegro Vivace” (sth Symphony), “Ave Maria” 'S’ Hubert) and “Grand Choeur” (Salome). Items by the popular ,ne Fotir Messrs. Ripley, Richards, Me El wain and Thomas, proved very acceptable, hearty recalls following their numbers, "Dance of the Gnomes*’ (McDowell), and "Night Winds that So Gently Blow” (Calkin). A tenor solo, “A Dream” (Bartlett), sung by Mr. A. H. Ripley, proved an artistic offering, while Mr. Alan McElwaia’s amusing sketch, “Musical Speeches,” proved a very entertaining contribution. Mrs. Arthur Ripley provided the accompaniments in her usual artistic manner.
