IMPROVED PLAY IN GIRLS’ HOCKEY
REMUERA CONTESTS HARD-FOUGHT GAMES UOLLEGIATE vacations resulting in several teams being temporarily withdrawn from the competitions. have certainly detracted interest from the girls’ competitions, but the feature of the last two or three weeks has been the gradual improvement of the standard of hockey. Much could yet be wished for, but Saturday saw two of the keenest and most evenly contested games of the season.
Until near the end of the game the issue in the Y.W.C.A.-Mount Eden contest was in doubt and play was open and fast, moving from end to end of the field with neither side able to make much impression. Miss McLachlan for Y.W., was the first to register a score while in the second half the Y.W. girls gradually succumbed to the combined efforts of their opponents’ forward line, and the sure and heady stick work of Miss Lowe was responsible for the whistle finding the scores 3-1 in Eden’s favour. Miss Walker on the wing for Eden played a good, reliable stick,, while Miss Dawson on the opposite wing was also seen to advantage. While the Y.W. girls did not have the combination of their opponents in their forward line, their backs played well, the work of Miss Grace being outstanding, and Miss Harford, as the left half, was also good. In the front line, Misses Dickey and Hubber were prominent.
Arawa beats Somerville Though little outstanding stickwork was exhibited, the victory of 1-0 in favour of Arawa was only wrested from Somerville after a hard-fought battle, in which there was little to choose between either side. Both teams were triers, and play was fairly even throughout, moving rapidly from end
to end of the field. Combination was deficient, though both teams possess some promising players. Miss M. Bell in the backs and her sister in the forwards were prominent for Somerville, exhibiting fair stick-work, while Eden’s scorer, Miss Thomas, was one of the most prominent players in that team. JUNIOR RESULTS. Wesley, 7 (Miss Burton 4, Broady, Saunders,, Sparling), beat Y.W.C.A. C, 0. Papakura, 7, beat Somerville, 1. Y.W.C.A. A, 1 (Miss Scarborough), beat Y.W.C.A. B, 0.
