NOT ENTIRELY DRY
LIQUOR IN AMERICA BOOTLEG AND HOME-MADE HEAVY SMUGGLING IN CANADA By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.15 a.m. WASHINGTON, Fri. Treasury officials estimated that Americans have consumed over 250,000,000 gallons of intoxicating beverages since prohibition came into force.
The greater part of this could be described as illegal under a strict interpretation of the Volstead Act, but in many instances it was perfectly proper and legal. Sacramental wine consumption totalled over 24,000,000 gallons. It is estimated that home-made wine consumption was many times greater and about 30,000,000 gallons of whisky was released from bondej warehouses for medicinal use. Bootleg liquor consumption was very heavy and it is estimated at several million gallons annually. Officials alleged that the majority of smuggling emanated from Canada, from where about 11,000,000 gallons of beer, ale, rum, gin and whisky ware smuggled annually.—A. and N.Z.
