In Spare Time

Boys May Earn £ls

“Old Ironsides” Competition

AN opportunity is now given boys to fill in their spare time in a very enjoyable manner and at the same time compete for valuable cash prizes. THE SUN, by arrangement with Paramount Pictures, is running an “Old Ironsides” model boat-building contest, open to every boy up to 16 years of age.

Ola ironsides is cue name w a famous sailing frigate which has the record of fighting more victorious battles than any other single ship. It set out at the beginning of the ISth century to rid the Mediterranean of the pirates that menaced its freedom. Laurence Stallings, noted author, wrote a living breathing story of the deeds of this great old ship and now Paramount Pictures has made a Road Show Picture of it. James Cruze, director of “The Covered Waggon” and other great pictures of the past, was specially chosen to direct this really great epic of the sea.

Contestants may use their own imagination to an extent in building the models. “Old Ironsides” was a sailing frigate of the period of 1804. She carried 54 mounted guns on two decks and was equipped for every known sail. The models should be between 20 and 30 inches long. Plans

of the “Old Ironsides” models have been published in this newspaper for the past few weeks. The contest closes on June 30, when all models should be handed in to the “Old Ironsides” Contest Editor, care of THE SUN.

A splendid model of a 16th century ship is at present on view in the lounge of the Regent Theatre. This was built by Mr. Tom Philcox in his spare time and though it is a ship of a much earlier period than “Old Ironsides,” the detail is worth studying.

The competition is open to boys up to 16 years of age. Model builders are invited to apply to “Old Ironsides” Contest Editor, THE SUN, for further information about the ship. Please fill in this coupon and send it to the Contest Editor if you intend to submit a model:
