“Preyed on Public”
MAN FROM AUCKLAND PROBATION OFFICER’S LOAN (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. A man like you cannot be allowed to prey on the public; you know it’s impossible,” Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., told George William Allen in the Police Court to-day. “The only thing to do is to keep you in gaol. Why, you have served almost half your lifetime in prison already!” Allen got six months’ imprisonment with hard labour for imposing upon people to get money, by means of plausible tales. The probation officer at Christchurch and a social worker were Allen’s dupes. He came to Christchurch from Auckland, and wetn to see the probation officer, whom he told that he had £l6 due to him from Auckland. In the meantime he was hard up. The probation officer lent him 10s out of his own pocket. Next day, when Allen came to “touch” him again, the probation officer took him to a social worker, who lent Allen £l. Later, it was found that Allen’s story of the £l6 from Auckland was not true. He had ia formidable “list.”
