GOVERNOR’S REGRET

FATHER’S WAIKATO ESTATE HIS FAMILY INTEREST (THE SUN'S Special Representative) HUNTLY, To-day. Regret that his father parted with his estates in the Waikato was expressed by His Excellency the Gover-nor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, at Huntly to-day. “If he hadn’t sold the land, I would have been a richer man to-day,” he said laughingly, after he had been welcomed to the town. Sir Charles said he felt that he had a family interest in the Waikato. “I don’t know if my father was ever in Huntly, but I think he must have been,” he said. “In 1874 he was all through the Waikato and he took a large block of land at Cambridge. He held it until 1892, when he said he spent all his money and he had to give it up. “If he had held on, I would have been a richer man to-day. My father always said that the Waikato was the finest country he ever saw outside Scotland. His expectations have been fully justified.”
