Can Ponsonby Depose Marist? To-morrow’s Senior Games Reviewed THE star attraction at Carlaw Park this week is the game between Ponsonby and Marist. Fresh from its thrilling tussle with City last Saturday, Ponsonby - ” : ght out to depose Marist from the premier position on the championship ladder.

Ponsonby has played only two games so far this season, having played a drawn game with Newton in its first match on a wet day, and defeated City last Saturday on Carlaw Park. On the face of it, Marist has a hard task in front of itself to defeat last year’s champions.

But Marist are very confident of being able to bring about Ponsonby’s defeat. The former team gave a very poor display against Richmond last Saturday, and will have to improve the side considerably to have a chance. It is, however, a well-known fact that Marist neevr has played good football on No. 2 ground, and is a totally different team on No. 1.

It is also reported that the Marist team will include several new men when it takes the field on Saturday. Pascoe, who will be remembered as a very promising man when playing for Manukau will be included in the team and possibly another prominent player of the same club. Ponsonby on the other hand is a good team, always hard to beat on any ground, and as the team has played together so often and has now had time to find its feet, a good fast open game is assured. NEWTON AT HEADQUARTERS On No. 2 ground Newton will be seen on Carlaw Park for the first time this year, and is very confident of being able to bring about the defeat of the City team. On the two games already played this team surprised in its first match by defeating Richmond on the Domain, and a week later drew with Ponsonby, but whether it is a strong team remains to be seen later. Newton will have to be as good as their supporters claim to have a chance with City. Newton has evidently taken a new lease of life and will get a great reception if it can defeat the red and blacks. The forwards are a

good even lot, and with Somers hooking are sure to get a fair share of the ball.

The backs are said to be showing good combination, and as the team is training well it is sure to be hard to defeat.

City will field practically the same team as last week and Newton is advised that in the event of getting a lead on City at any part of the game to be aware of the late run that has been so noticeable with City in their matches this year. In the first match of the season against Shore City was well down at the beginning, but came with a rattle at the finish. The following week against Richmond the score at half-time was 15—2 against City. The red and blacks not only made a draw of the game, but at the finish were unlucky not to have won. Again last Saturday, Ponsonby had a good lead when City put in its claim, but was a little bit too late. Ponsonby was pleased to hear the bell ring all the same, so take the tip, Newton! AT GREY LYNN

The third senior game will be played at Grey Lynn Park between Richmond and Athletic. It should at least be a fast, open game, and if the former plays like it did last Saturday against Marist, it should have no difficulty in defeating the young and promising

Athletic team, which, it is to be hoped, will be considerably strengthened from last Saturday. This young team has been very fortunate in securing the services of Mr. “Albie” Renwick as a coach, and should be able to learn a lot from his experience in England.
