A RUGBY VIGNETTE
The referee who figures every Saturday at Eden Park in the Rugby matches walked in to the auctioneering rooms. “Hello,” said the bright auctioneer brightly. “Are we on side? Yes, of course we are,” he pattered on, as he offered a nice coal-scuttle for sale. “That’s right, scrum here. Now for this very charming little gas stove. Are we on side, referee?” The bright auctioneer was determined to be bright and let everyone know that he was on the right side of the scrum with the referee.
“Now then,” continued the auctioneer, “Who’s for this very useful brush —no home should be without one. Come on now, what about the referee?” “You try it first,” suggested the referee.
“Right!” said the bright auctioneer, as, in the bustle of the moment, he removed his hat.
Then the crowd laughed and turned toward the referee.
The bright auctioneer was trying to brush a perfectly w T hite, bald head.
