BOYS IN DANGER
ONE NEARLY DROWNED CLOSE CALL AT CHRISTCHURCH (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. DESCUED from the estuary at Redcliffs yesterday, a nine-year-old boy named Holmes, living at 10 Williard Street, Fendalton, was in such a plight, unconscious and exhausted, that it was nearly two hours before he could be taken home. He was fishing at the end of the Sailing Club’s jetty when he fell into the water. The tide was running out strongly. A lad about his own size who could not swim, jumped in after his companion. Both boys were seen to be in serious trouble, and a junior member of the Sailing Club, Mr. George Allen, of Office Road, St. Albans, hearing calls for help, rushed out and launched a dinghy. Mr. Allen reached both lads and hauled them aboard. Mrs. Major commenced resuscitation and after half-an-hour’s treatment Holmes showed some signs of returning consciousness and he was removed to Sumner for . medical treatment.
