STOLEN BICYCLE

“HUNDREDS A YEAR” (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. “Thefts of bicycles are so numerous that unless one comes down with a heavy hand on these fellows, more thieving is encouraged,” said Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Police Court today, when sentencing a youth named Joseph William Groom to a month’s gaol for stealing a bicycle. The accused pleaded guilty to the theft of a bicycle valued at £6. Chief-Detective Lewis said that Groom was 22. He took the bicycle to a dealer to sell it, and was advanced 5s on the machine.

“I suppose you have almost daily reports of thefts of bicj’cles,’ said the magistrate.

“Yes,” replied the chief-detective. Hundreds in a year.”
