“TIME OF STRESS”
STREET COLLECTIONS CITY COUNCIL’S LIMITATION VICTORIA LEAGUE’S PLE£ The Auckland City Council’s action in excluding the Victoria League from the list of organisations authorised to hold street collections has been the subject of a letter of protest from the league, which asked last night that the decision be reconsidered. Cr. Melville said it was a great hardship on the Victoria League that they had lost their collection day. She thought such organisation should launch combined efforts, instead of working singly. Cr. M. J. Coyle supported Miss Melville’s proposal that the subject be referred to a committee. Cr. J. B. Paterson offered to give notice to rescind the previous motion, which both he and Or. Stallworthy condemned as arbitrary. “This is a time of stress and trouble,* said Cr. E. Phelan, who agreed that the number of days should not be limited. At the same time he thought Cr. Melville’s motion was out of order
Cr. Entrican: The people get tired of these collections.
Cr. Melville’s mot on, that the Finance Committee nvestigate the question, was carried.
