Electorates Are More Compact
ALTERED BOUNDARIES WELLINGTON VIRTUALLY RECAST (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. By the allocation of electoral boundaries an outline of which was published in yesterday’s SUN and by which Auckland City will be given an extra seat in place of one electorate taken away from the South Island substantial alterations are made In several districts In both North and ooutn Islands.
Part of Ohinemuri, which has disappeared, has been absorbed by Thames, while the other portion has been included in Mercer. The new electorate, Auckland South, is sandwiched in between Roskill and Grey Lynn.
Eden has shrunk considerably, and takes no portion of the Auckland City with the exception of the Asylum endowment.
Manukau does not Include any portion of the Franklin County as hitherto, but portion of Manukau is taken I? ky Parnell, which now extends to fet. Hellers Bay.
The usual extension of Auckland Central has necessitated the embracing of some of Auckland East, while Eden relieves Waitemata of the Borough of Birkenhead, Waitemata taking a small portion of the country to the north of the existing boundary. In the other remaining Northern electorates there are minor alterations of boundaries to suit the drift of the population, mainly affecting counties and small local bodies In the respective vicinities.
New Plymouth has grown to such an extent that the Taranaki electorate has been reduced and renamed New Plymouth.
Southern electorates have been altered somewhat. Christchurch North takes in Papanui borough, formerly in Ricearton, while some of North is placed in Avon. South and East remain unaltered. The northern part of New Brighton borough has gone into Kaiapoi. Ricearton itself has been considerably altered, forming a compact electorate bounded by Ellersmere, Lyttelton, and Kaiapoi. Ellesmere and Temuka have practically absorbed the former Ashburton electorate.
Buller and Motueka have been altered slightly. Westland remains, and Clutha is strengthened by the addition of Taieri district from Chalmers. Wakatipu has been renamed Otago Central, because it embraces a great deal of Central Otago. Dunedin seats are little altered, part of Otago peninsula being transferred from Chalmers to Central, and Chalmers now takes part of Dunedin South, including the borough of Mosgiel and Green Island borough. Wellington has been practically recast. The whole of the Mirimar peninsula comes into East, and Island Ray into South. North has lost Kelburn and Northland, which are now in Suburbs. Central absorbs portion of East. Suburbs does not embrace anything outside the city. Portion of the city known as Kliandallah has gone into Otaki, while Hutt shrunk appreciably, embracing the three boroughs of Hutt, Petone, and Eastbourne.
Upper Hutt borough is in Wairarapa. Masterton takes small portions of the surrounding electorates.
Objections to the boundaries, as suggested by the commission, will be received, in the case of the North Island, up to June 27, and in the case of the South, up to June 28.
The alterations will not take effect till the next general election.
