Tragic Collision Follows Men’s Career in Stolen Car
A MAN KILLED—OTHERS INJURED Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A tragedy occurred on the Hutt Road this afternoon, when two young men, Henry Stacey and Ernest George Reid, careered along the road in a stolen Essex car, and crashed into a service car coming to Wellington from Masterton.
They were admitted to the public hospital with minor injuries; but before this they were charged with unlawfully converting the Essex car to their own use. THE KILLED Mr. H. E. Kenny, of Johnsonville, driver of the service car, was killed outright, his head being smashed to a pulp. THE INJURED The injured are:— Miss Madge Williams, nurse girl, suffering from head injuries. Mrs. lan Mcßae and infant, of Oruri Station, Wairarapa, suffering from abrasions and shock. A young girl (name unknown), who joined the car at Featherston, suffering from abrasions and shock.
Sydney Waters, journalist, Wellington, late of Christchurch, cut under the right eye, necessitating two stitches; dislocated finger abrasions and shock. Henry Stacey, Wellington, injuries to the face and hands. Ernest George Reid, Wellington, injuries to the head and chest. Both cars were badly smashed. The collision occurred about a mile on the city side of the Petone crossing. The time was about 4.15 p.m. The service car had its radiator smashed in, and a wheel and mudguard stripped off. The Essex sedan was ruined, its body and glass-work being shattered. Mrs. Mcßae and her baby in arms were sitting next to the driver. They had a miraculous escape.
