NEW OIL VESSEL
HAUTURU LEAVES GLASGOW NORTHERN COMPANY’S SHIP The Northern Steam Ship Company advises that its new oil vessel Hauturu sailed from Glasgow on Saturday last for Auckland. The vessel gave the utmost satisfaction during her trial trip on May 16 and is expected here in about two months’ time. The Hauturu is built of steel and has had fitted twin internal combustion oil engines of the very latest design. She is a vessel of shallow draught, built specially for the Bast Coast trade, where there are bar harbours and very little water at times. The Northern Company now own eight auxiliary cargo vessels, which, on account of their shallow draught can be utilised at ports it is impossible for a steamer to enter.
The company’s vessel, 'Waiuku, was also constructed in Great Britain, being built at Southampton in 1915, while the Rarawa, Apanui, Ngatiawa, and Ngapuhi are all from the, dockyards of the old land.
