WINDOW-SILLS
NOVELTY IN DESIGNING. A GAY CUT-OUT FRIEZE. A novel and attractive decoration for a sitting-room window-sill is a gay cut-out frieze picturing bright red and yellow tulips rising up from vivid green grass. The flowers are drawn on a sheet of three-ply wood, after which the shapes are cut out with a fret-saw and painted with enamel. The frieze is kept upright by being glued on to a flat strip of wood which acts as a stand. As an alternative to the t, u *ips, one can design a row of stiff little green trees in scarlet pots; oranges should appear to be growing on some of the trees lemons on others. To carry the idea still farther, the curtains might be stencilled with a similar design, and buff linen cushion covers would look gay and colourful if they were embroidered en suite. The same scheme may be carried out in the nursery, a frieze of fat white geese, with big orange beaks and bright red legs, being particularly suitable for the Little Folks’ domain. A design depicting woolly white lambs disporting themselves in a daisy-studded green field is also excellent for the play-room. Flowers may be drawn freehand, but animals and birds are better traced from a book of natural history pictures. There are endless possi- • bilities in the idea, and, once you begin, you will soon realise how charming the shabbiest old window-sill may be made to look if some artistry is brought to bear upon its treatment.
