NIGHT IN SEA INFESTED BY SHARKS

AIRMEN’S GRIM WAIT PICKED UP AT DAWN By Cable.—Press association.—Copyright Reed. 9.25 a.m. LONDON, Monday. Flight-Lieutenants Carr and Gillman spent the night on their overturned airplane, to which they swam after being thrown out into the sharkinfested seas in the Persian Gulf. They were taken off at dawn by a lighthouse-keeper. Their long-distance flight is so close to a record that the International Aeronautical Federation will have to decide the matter. Air Chief-Marshal Sir Hugh Trenchard cabled congratulations to the airmen on their splendid flight: “Sorry you were unable to reach your goal.” Bagdad reports that a naval patrolboat picked up the aviators, but has not salvaged the plane, which is badly damaged. It floated upsidedown for some time.
