SMART GALLOPS

KAWINI IMPRESSES A DASHING ROUND TRAINING AT HEADQUARTERS There was plenty of galloping at Ellerslie this morning, but very little jumping. The outside of the course proper was open, and this was freely availed of. The going was soft near the straight, and round the back it was heavy. The most important work recorded was as follows: Before breakfast Haerera went a round, being picked up by Gala Day at the six furlongs, the former running the last seven furlongs in 1.39 2-5. Beau Cavalier, who has not been indulged in much work of late on account of corns, was also sent a round, which he cut out in the fair time of 2.12 1-5, the last half-mile occupying 59 4-5.

Michael was better than Little Marvel and Mountain Guide at the end of four furlongs, left behind in 54 4-5, and Luxurious and Rina Mangu cut out the last four of five furlongs in 55. Archibald was sent a rousing gallop of a mile and a-half without going for time. Tie is in splendid fettle. A SMART HALF Wyoming and Alonsoa were companions after breakfast over four furlongs, doing the distance in 51 4-5, the last three occupying 39. It was a smart performance. Archeno and Judge’s Box left six furlongs behind in 1.24 2-5, the last four taking them 56. They were not out for time. The Bansant went four furlongs in 53 1-5, and continues to show improvement. Town Guard was better than Cawnpore in a spin from the six furlongs post, taking 1.23 4-5, the last half-mile being left behind in 56. Town Guard appears to have gone on the right way since he raced so consistently at Ellerslie last month, and he should not be long in again being in the limelight. LOMINT PLEASES A fine effort was that registered by Lomint, J. Thorpe’s Cornwall Handicap candidate. The daughter or Catmint was partnered by Lady Robinson. From a standing start at the finishing post the latter began quickly and set a smart pace for five furlongs, when Lomint ran up to her, and finishing very strongly Lomint passed the post half a dozen lengths in advance of the filly. The time for the nine furlongs (there were two trestles out) was 2.9 2-5, which was a very good performance with a slow start. The first furlong took 15 4-5, and then they reeled them off as follows: —Two furlongs in 30, three in 43 1-5, four in 55 1-5, five in 1.11 2-5, six in 1.25 3-5, with Lomint doing it very nicely over the last three furlongs in 43 4-5, and she could have taken something off that time. Lomint should prove a good substitute for the defunct Chamour in the big flat race at Ellerslie next week. Sun Up, who looks all the better for his racing at Hawera, hit out freely in negotiating four furlongs in 53 2-5. ANOTHER GOOD ROUND Tall Timber revealed «some speed in finishing slightly better than Kamehameha, with Slump eased off over the last part, in a round, which was cut out in 2.9 1-5, the first half-mile taking 55 4-5 and the final four furlongs 57 2-5. Karamu went well in a circuit done in 2.16 1-5, and Passionate and Killute covered seven furlongs in 1.38. Star Comet and Ahi Ngaro came home over the last five furlongs of six in 1.11 1-5, and Waiau Lad covered seven furlongs in 1.43. THE MASTER’S EFFORT Master Boon had White Bird as a partner in a gallop over six furlongs. They made the pace warm throughout, the first two being run in 26sec., the three in 39sec., and they came home in 1.20 4-5, doing the final half-mile in 54.4-ssec. Master Boon came away from his companion in the straight, completing a promising trial. On the sand Arch Queen ran three furlongs in 53sec. without being pushed along. Rahepoto was doing it better than Llewellyn at the end of a round in 2.15, the first four furlongs taking 58sec. The latter looks none the worse for his Egmont Steeplechase effort. Golden Krist went a round in 2.14 4-5. He went very scratchily at the start. Miss Lucca, who is engaged in the hunters’ events next month, completed the last mile of a round in 2.0 3-5. KAWIN I AGAIN Ridden by R. Hall, the great Northern candidate Kawini, was sent a round by himself, and he accomplished his task in dashing style. He was permitted to take matters easy over the early part, the first quarter occupying 30 3-ssec. and the four furlongs 58 2-ssec., but then the pace was clapped on and he completed the nine furlongs in 2.8 3-5 —the best of the morning for once round. The first six furlongs took 1.27 1-5. and the last three 41 2-5 sec. It was a fine effort, impressive in the manner of its accomplishmet. Glenlight, Glenotus and Blue Sky finished in that order at the end of a round done in 2.15 4-5. Clockwork went very well and had he not waited for his companions at the end he would have registered much faster time. JUMPING Master Mind was tried again over tha pony hurdles, but he has yet to learn what they represent. The first time he got hung up on top of the hurdle, and then twice in succession he sat on his haunches and pushed it over with his feet. Sea Comet gave a fine display in a circuit of the schooling hurdles, fencing cleanly and fast throughout. His companion, Comet King, rapped the first and last very hard, and in between got up too high. Nevertheless he shows some aptitude for the game. Fair Abbey, Simplicitas and King of the Air were partners over four hurdles, the first-mentioned doing best. Simplicitas knocked one or two, and King of the Air was slow. ARRIVALS This morning the arrivals included Degage, who is engaged in the Cornwall Handicap, the race she won last year, and Tuki, who is to contest the Great Northern Steeplechase. Nukumai is due to arrive before the end of the week, and probablv Omahu, Ngata and Brigadier Bill will be here to-morrow or Thursday. LATE SCRATCHING Charlatan was scratched at 3.35 p.m. yesterday for all engagements at the Auckland winter meeting.
