CROWN COIN’S JUMPING
EXPECTED TO COME GOOD OVER THE BIG FENCES
There were several promising - recruits to the lepping game seen out at Wanganui, but easily the most impressive was Crown Coin. In his schooling efforts at Wanganui prior to the recent meeting Crown Coin had displayed no partiality to the bigger fences, and he gave his party little encouragement to support him in his immediate engagements. However, he went a fair race only in the Flack Steeplechase on Thursday, although it was obvious early in the piece that he was not at home over the fences. Fie gained confidence as the event progressed, and eventually finished fourth. This was not bad for a first showing, despite the fact that it was an indifferent fourth. TAILED OFF Crown Coin was again produced on Saturday in the Grandstand Steeplechase, and he was not rushed by investors. Over the first mile the horse was tailed off, standing the leaders a big advantage, so much that he was not given any chance with the race half over. Over the final mile he put in a great run and was fourth a furlong from home. The finishing run put in by Crown Coin will not be forgotten for a long time. He was going nearly twice as fast as anything else in the straight, afid at the end he had got to within a length of Peter Maxwell. It was a slashing effort, and shows that with a little more experience over the big jumps Crown Coin will become as proficient as he was over hurdles. NOT IN NORTHERNS It is probable that the form shown by Crown £oin at Wanganui took his connections by surprise, for the horse was not nominated for either of the Great Northerns. With his pace ami jumping ability, it is quite possible that Crown Coin would have done all right in the Ellerslie jumping events next week. With Crown Coin not engaged at Auckland, it is probable that he will not be raced again until the Napier and Hawke’s Bay meetings, for his native owner lives in the parched province. After those two fixtures have been covered Crown Coin will probably be prepared for the Wellington Steeplechase, and if he goes on as well as expected, will then be taken on to Riccarton for the Grand National.
