ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL

Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, the mayor, presided over an ordinary meeting of Onehunga Borough Council last evening.

Yet another request was made that the council would receive a further deputation concerning the claims of residents in that part of One Tree Hill district, recently transferred to Onehunga, concerning the adjustment of loans, allocations, etc. However, it received a negative response, the mayor and councillors considering that the subject had already been exhaustively considered and dealt with. A report from Mr. W. J. Jordan. M.P., stated that he had received from the Prime Minister a letter notifying that the Government is not willing to consider the establishment of an elective transport board. Managers of Onehunga Free Kindergarten asked for a donation. Hitherto £2 2s had been granted; but, after the mayor had pointed out the good work accomplishd by that institution, the donation was increased to £3 3s. Onehunga Waterside Workers’ Union asked that the council would arrange for a minimum fare on the tramways of one penny from the wharf to Upper Queen Street, and stating that they considered the return fare of Is from the city exorbitant. The mayor promised to introduce the subject to the meeting of delegates on the following evening. Answering a protest from the council concerning the nuisance created by burning sulphur at the Te Papapa works of the Farmers’ Fertiliser Co , the firm forwarded an explanation, as an indication of the abatement of the same, and this the council accepted as satisfactory. Accounts to the amount of £2,415 19s were passed for payment. Mr. T. R. Gilbert, an old member of the council, suffered defeat at the recent elections, and the mayor pointed out that, according to the Act, Mr. Gilbert automatically lost bis position as a member of the Fire Board, although his term of office would otherwise not have expired for one year and three months. By the unanimous wish of the council, Mr. Gilbert was reappointed to office for that period.
