RIALTO THEATRE
“SPANGLES” The new programme at the Rialto Theatre to-night will include two fine features. “Spangles,” one of the films, is an excellent romantic melodrama of circus life. The entire story takes place in and around a travelling circus and it is said that the atmosphere of the sawdust arena has been exceptionally well handled. The plot concerns the human side of these people and introduces a pretty little romance as well as the fascination of the circus, with peeps behind the scenes into the lives, loves and jealousies of the performers. Marion Nixon is said to give a pleasing performance in the title role, and Pat O’Malley plays one of his best parts as the hero. Gladys Brockwell takes the part of the discarded sweetheart, and Hobart Bosworth is seen as the circus owner. In addition to an exciting climax.there is a thrilling jhariot race scene and some wonderful sequences of animal studies. The story is based on a novel by Nellie Revell. The second picture will be “The Country Beyond,” adapted from one of James Oliver Curwood’s stories. The story is said to be similar to that of “Rose Marie,” the popular musical comedy which has been a success wherever it has appeared. Olive Borden, the young actress who was featured in the recent picture “Fig Leaves” has the role of Valencia and J. Farrell MacDonald is said to give a very human sketch as Sergeant Cassidy. There will be a full supporting programme.
