TRIMMERS DEMAND HIGHER RATES
NEWCASTLE STRIKE SHIPPING HELD UP By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 11.40 a.m. NEWCASTLE, Today As a result of a strike of Newcastle coal trimmers, oversea and Inter-State shipping work at the port has been brought to a standstill. The trimmers demanded Is an hour above the ordinary rates when they were engaged in trimming the steamer Pakipaki, on the grounds that they were in considerable danger as she carried a cargo of benzine. After much wrangling the Pakipaki’s master offered 6d an hour extra, which was accepted. The men were about to resume when they made an additional demand for payment for the time occupied in the negotiations. This the master refused, and the trimmers left the vessel.
The Pakipaki then left for Port Kembla to procure bunkers there. The trimmers next demanded that they should be put at the head of the roster for the next shift, but as this was a breach of the roster rules of the Stevedoring Association, it was refused.
The trimmers thereupon struck. Among the vessels affected are the Kawatiri and the Coolana.—A. and N.Z.
