Auckland's Need

HOTEL FOR VISITORS SIR W. HALL-JONES’S VIEWS “If they carry out the design of the new Hotel Auckland, I doubt if there will be a place to equal it in Australia,” said the Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones, K.C.M.G., M.L.C., last evening. Sir William said that he had been very interested in the scheme when he saw it featured in THE SUN on Saturday night. Since then he had seen the planfi. For comfort and convenience the building would be the last word in modern architecture. • “Americans and people from other parts of the world require accommodation which can only be provided by hotels like this proposed one,” he said. “The site has the two big advantages of being in the heart of the city and yet in a quiet area. Wealthy overseas people, including Australians, would take advantage of the place, and their influx would be an important thing for Auckland. “We must bear in mind that Auckland is going to grow. It is the first and last port of call for American ships. It Is a beautiful town, with a fine harbour. But there is one thing wanting, and that is hotel accommodation. I am not speaking for my own personal comfort, for I have not been used to the lavishness, hut our rich visitors have been, and we must cater for them.”
