A COSTLY BIRD
SHOT ON SUNDAY NEW LEGAL POINT (From Our Own Correspondent .) WHANGAREI, To-day. Before Mr. F. H. Levien at the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday, H. F. Galton pleaded guilty to •hooting a pukeko on May 1. Mr. Briggs, solicitor for the Acclimatisation Society, said the ranger heard three shots in a swamp on the afternoon of May 1, and on investigating found accused with a pukeko in liis bag. There were three men altogether In search of game with guns and dogs. Accused said the owners of the property had asked him to shoot pukeko at any and all times, as they did themselves. These birds were a menace to crops, doing an enormous amount of damage. He certainly shot the bird, but did not think that under the circumstances he was doing any harm. The party were in search of pigs. The magistrate asked Mr. Briggs why the season started on May 2 this year, and elicited the reply that it was by instruction of the Minister, who evidently did not believe in Sunday shooting. Accused was convicted and fined £4, with costs £2.
