BROADCASTING CANBERRA
REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT FUTURE OF TELEVISION One of the real romances associated with the inauguration of Canberra as the seat of government of the Commonwealth was probably allowed to pass unnoticed by many thousands of people whose attention was focused on the events. It is the amazing dedevolpment of science during the present century which made possible the wireless broadcasting of the ceremonies on this historic occasion.
People now in the prime of life can recall clearly the pageantry attendant on the inception of the Commonwealth 26 years ago. Those days do not seem far distant; but if anyone had prophesied at that time that a quarter of a century hence people distant hundreds of miles would be able to hear the audible proceedings at a similar ceremony, clearly and simultaneously, in the comfort of their homes, he would have been laughed at. Yet such a miracle has now become a commonplace. And the amazing march of human achievement is still proceeding. Already television —seeing at a distance—is becoming a familiar word to those who keep abreast of current events. It is yet in its early infancy; but who will venture to say that in a quarter of a century from now—perhaps even in a decade —persons will not be able to see historic ceremonies at a distance as well as hear them? Democracy has limitless aspirations, but progress continues to be measured by the achievements of the few.
