COMMUNITY SINGING

SEASON OPENS IN JUNE So successful have been the seasons of community singing held in Auckland in recent years that it has been decided to hold another series of gatherings during the winter months, commencing on Wednesday, June 15, when the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, will act as chjtirman, and the Rev. Jasper Calder as song-leader. Through the courtesy of Messrs. Hayward, Ltd., the meetings this year will be held in the Strand Theatre each Wednesday between 12.30 and 1.30. A season of 12 meetings has been arranged, and it is anticipated that an extension of this programme will be necessary. Last year the committee found some difficulty in arousing the essential

"warmth” in the rather “chilly” atmosphere of the Town Hall, which, it was found, was not altogether suitable for community singing. The central situation of the Strand and its comfortable appointments should go far to assure the success of the coming season.

Last year over 20,000 song books were distributed free of charge at the meetings and arrangements are in hand for the supply of a new booklet containing over 60 popular songs. There appears to be a growing tendency among community singers to revert to folk songs and well-known ballads and the committee has borne this in mind in compiling the new book.

The following officers have control of the arrangements for the season: Chairman, Mr. M. Guthrie; secretary, Mr. Jack Dicketts; assistant secretary, Mr. R. L. Patterson. The matters of publicity have been left in the hands of Messrs. L. A. Eady and Vernon T. Drew, who will have the assistance of members of the Auckland Advertising Club.
