The Log Book

PERSONAL. —Captain P. J. Foster, marine superintendent, and Mr. J. Smith, engineer superintendent of the Union Company, arrived in Auckland yesterday from Wellington.

Mr. Sutherland, chief officer of the Kaitangata, has left the vessel on leave, his place having been taken by Mr. N. M. Bonetti.

Mr. C. F. C. Mugford has relieved Mr. A. E. Foster as third officer, of the Sussex. The latter officer is on holiday leave. Mr. W. P. Gould has been appointed third officer of the Loongana, relieving Mr. R. Allan for orders. Mr. D. C. N. Champion has been appointed third officer of the Kittawa. Mr. D. W. Williams has joined the Kaiwarra as second officer.

Mr. J. J. Barnard has been appointed second officer of the Kamona, relieving Mr. W. A. Dohrn, who has been transferred to the Waipiata in a similar capacity.

HERTFORD SAILS. A departure from Wellington yesterday morning was the Federal steamer Plertford loaded with Dominion produce for London and West of England ports, via Panama.

MIDDLESEX FOR HOME. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Federal steamer Middlesex leaves Wellington at daybreak on Wednesday for London, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool, via Panama. PORT DENISON COMPLETING.— To complete her loading the C. and D. Line steamer Port Denison arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from Wanganui. She is scheduled to clear Wellington on Wednesday for London, via Panama.

RARANGA AT WANGANUI. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advises that the Raranga arrived at Wanganui yesterday from Wellington and returns to Wellington again on Thursday to complete loading. She sails finally from Wellington next Saturday for London, via Falkland Islands, Montevideo and Rio de Janiero.

MAUNGANUI FROM SYDNEY.— According to a radio message received by the Union Companj*, the Maunganui from Sydney arrives at Auckland at 7 a.m. to-morrow. She berths at Prince’s Wharf and leaves Auckland next Thursday at 3 p.m. on her return trip to Sydney.

NORFOLK COMPLETING.— At present completing her loading at Auckland, the K.Z. Shipping Company hopes to dispatch the Federal steamer on Friday next for New York, Boston, London, Avonmouth, Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool, via Panama. HUNTINGDON RADIOS. —En route from YTest Coast ports of England, the Federal steamer Huntingdon is due at Auckland next Friday, states the N.Z. Shipping Company. The vessel is bringing cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Bluff. SULPHUR FROM TEXAS. —The steamer Persian Prince is due at Auckland at 1 p.m. to-day with a full cargo of sulphur from Texas. She will berth at King's TSJharf to unload 4,200 tons for Auckland to the agenev of Messrs. Robert Millar and Company. The remainder of the cargo is for Lyttelton, New Plymouth, Wanganui and Australia.

PACIFIC TRANSPORT REPORTS. —Messrs., Henderson and Macfarlane are in receipt of a wireless message advising that the steamer Pacific Transport, which has phosphates for discharge at Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and Bluff, expects to arrive at Lyttelton next Friday from Nauru Island.

WARNING TO MARINERS. H.M.S. Diomede left port this morning for the Hauraki Gulf to carry out torpedo and gunnery practice. Mariners and others concerned are warned by the Marine Department that the cruiser will be firing heavy guns on May 27 and May 30. There will be night firing and star shells on May 31, and heavy gun firing, day and night, on June 1. TAHITI AT WELLINGTON.— The Royal Mail liner Tahiti arrived at Wellington from Sydney at 6.5 a.m. today. After loading cargo and mail and embarking passengers she is to resume her voyage to Rarotonga, Papeete and San Francisco at three o’clock to-morrow afternoon. CARGO FROM LON DON.— Cable advice received states that the Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s motorship Port Dunedin sailed from London last Friday for Suva, Wellington, Auckland and Napier. She is expected at Auckland about July 8. CARGO FROM MONTREAL.— The New Zealand Shipping Company is in receipt of cabled news that the Ikala will leave Montreal on May 31 with general cargo to discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney. The Walcheren will sail from Montreal on June 25 with general cargo to unload at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. PACIFIC COAST LOADINGS.— The Union Company advises that their fonward loading dates at the Pacific Coast are approximately as follow: Waihemo, at Vancouver and San Francisco during May for Apia, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, Bluff and New Plymouth. She will clear San Francisco early in June. Waitemata, at Vancouver and San Francisco in June for Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney. Wairuna, at Vancouver and San Francisco in July for Auckland, possibly Wellington), Melbourne and Sydney. Waiotapu, at Vancouver and San Francisco early in August for New Zealand and Australian ports. Hauraki, at Vancouver and San Francisco in September for Auckland, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. R.M.S. NIAGARA FROM VANCOUVER.—The Royal Mail liner, Niagara, arrived at Auckland this morning from Vancouver and berthed at noon at Prince’s Wharf to disembark passengers, and discharge mails and cargo. The vessel left Vancouver on May 4 and came via Honolulu and Suva, touching at the latter port on Friday, May 13. The whole voyage was made on seas as calm as a millpond, and, but for the intense heat on the way through the tropics, was perfect in every way. The Niagara brought 464 bags of English and American mail for Auckland, and a quantity of cargo from the Canadian port. The vessel will be dispatched at 11 p.m. to-night for Sydney, where she undergoes her annual overhaul and survey, the Maunganui relieving her for one trip only.
