ONEHUNGA ORPHANS

ENTERTAIN PRIME MINISTER

“A great night-out!” fairly well gives the concensus of opinion as to the interest and enjoyment afforded as the first night of the season of the Onehunga Orphans’ Club, held on Saturday evening under the chairmanship of the president, Mr. E. V. Sutherland. Apart from nearly 250 members and others present the guests included the Premier (Right Hon. J. G. Coates), W. J. Jordan (M.P. for Manukau), Sir Frederick Lang (ex-Speaker of the House), Messrs. G-eo. Baildon (Mayor of Auckland), H. R. McKenzie (chairman of Auckland Harbour Board), W. C. Coldicutt (Mayor of Onehunga), W. H. Wynyard (member of the Highways Board), Dr. Peter Buck, and many represenatives of Orphans’ clubs from districts far and near.

The Premier refrained from dipping at all deeply into current politics, but fully satisfied the company with a highly interesting recital of his experiences in his recent visit to England and the Continent, his visit to the various military cemeteries in France and elsewhere, and his general personal experiences in Flanders and France.

Presented by Mr. A. G. Holdsworth, 1 1 varied and popular programme of Vocal and instrumental music, etc., was enjoyed, the contributors including Messrs. W. Norgrove, J. Simpson, H. Bellam, Frank Sutherland, A. Gear (vocalists), H. McLennan (violin), •Walter Vernon (as ventroliquist with his noted friend. “Ginger”), with Mr. T.en Elliott, the well-known Devonport Orphan, presiding at the piano, and 1 ems by the orchestra under Mr. W. E. \Vebb. The only regrettable circumBtance of the gathering was that limited ■Jfime unavoidably compelled curtail- °£ the soc * al sit * e the gatherI
