GIRLS’ HOCKEY

ONLY TWO SENIOR GAMES LITTLE GOOD PLAY Only two senior women’s contests were played off at Remuera on Saturday—collegiate vacations were responsible for the others being postponed. Play was not of a particularly high standard. Turf was flying in all directions at certain periods in the Mount EdenSomerville contest. The former certainly overwhelmed the opposing side by. 9 to 0, but the victory was not due so much to good play as to force and hard hitting. Eden displayed little combination, and there was little science in the stickwork with wild and thoughtless hitting predominating. Miss Kelly played a fair stick for Eden, and Miss Walker on the right wing was also seen to advantage. Miss Lowe in the forward line was prominent in attack. Many likely movements were started by Miss Dawson, but the majority failed through lack of support and faulty stickwork Eden’s scorers were Misses Lowe (4), Walker (1), Ross (1) and Mrs. Robertson (3). Though play centred for the most part in Somerville territory, the latter did not put up the poor showing the scores indicated. Several times the forward line was seen in promising movements, in which creditable stickwork was exhibited. Hesitation and wild hitting, however, was also largely in evidence. Several players displayed a creditable knowledge of the finer points of the game, Misses Bell and Walsh at times being particularly prominent. Mr. F. Nicholson refereed. ARAWA DEFEAT Y.W.C.A. Lack of combination in the forward line was responsible for Y.W.C.A.’s defeat. Time after time the forwards would receive the ball from the halves and fail through lack of combination and tactics. Creditable hockey was played by the Y.W. tacks, and Miss Andrews was prominent in warding off attacks. For Arawa Misses Henry, Hall aifd Bestic were prominent. Miss Bestic secured Arawa’s two goals. Mr. A. Williams refereed.
