“MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME”

CAMBRIDGE HOSPITALITY WEST COAST STYLE Those who are familiar with the West Coast of the South Island are well aware that besides being noted for its valuable mineral deposits and beautiful scenic resources, it is recognised as the home of hospitality. People who have visited the Wonderful West are amazed at the extent to which the open-hearted Coaster will go to make strangers welcome, and those who have tasted the delights of this hospitality can never forget it. TRADITION OF THE PIONEER

It is a factor that West Coasters themselves are proud of, because it is an heirloom from the noble band of pioneers who opened up the Western country just over sixty years ago. In those days, when “the digger’s shirt was freedom’s badge,” one of the greatest characteristics of the mining camps was hospitality. And so this trait, handed down to posterity, is still a prominent feature of the one-time booming gold centre. PLEASANT ASSOCIATIONS

All this was brought vividly back to the mind of THE SUN representative quite recently at Cambridge, where the same congenial atmosphere and make-yourself-at-home style was very much in evidence. The hospitality extended to visitors at the country trotting meeting by the officials of the club was of a similar nature to that which obtains at West Coast race gatherings. The conviviality of the associations on Saturday made for a pleasant day all round, and any little disabilities that were experienced through the congestion in the pressroom were largely overshadowed by the kindness and consideration shown to the representatives present by the Cambridge officials.
