THE GIRL WHO DID NOT BELIEVE IN FAIRIES

Once there was a girl called Muriel, and she didn’t believe in fairies. One day she was sitting on a chair, with nothing to do, when a fairy did come. The fairy stood in the air above her lap, and said: “I am a fairy and have come to see you. This is the time of the year I come to see people who don’t believe in fairies.” Muriel looked up and said: "You are not a fairy; you’re only dressed up to make me believe in fairies.” When the fairy heard these words ! she was astonished, and tried to teach j Muriel about the little people. Then Muriel began to think there really were fairies, and she listened hard. When the fairy had finished she said: “Do you believe in fairies now?” But Muriel would not admit that she did, so the fairy went away, and the next time she came Muriel said ; she believed in them. —Flora Chilwell (aged 9).
