ONEHUNGA JUDGES The following have been appointed judges at the Onehunga Poultry Club’s 10th Annual Show, which will be held in the Foresters’ Hall on June 16 and 17: All fancy poultry and duck classes, excepting Game —Mr. W. A. Hanson. Game and all varieties of Bantams— Mr. I. Ball. All Utility classes of poultry and duck classes —Mr. A. Palmer. Fancy Pigeons—Mr. W. G. Mason. Homing Pigeons.—Mr. H. D. Bedford. Canaries—Mr. J. Simpson. A NEW CANADIAN BREED The “Turken” is the name of a new variety of poultry which made its first public appearance at the Edmonton Poultry Show. It is a cross between a turkey and the Rhode Island hen. raised by Mr. Geo. Spurgeon, and which is said will effect a revolution in the poultry business, as it combines the best features of hen and turkey. It has a hen body and a turkey head. SUCCESS AT WHANGAREI Mr. D. H. Rumbal, YVhangarei, who is well known to Auckland fanciers, had a very successful run at the Whangarei Show. In addition to winning the Hoey Memorial Trophy for best bird in the show, be was awarded the North Island championship for Black Orpingtons, a five-guinea trophy for best young bird in the show, Club Shield for best young bird in utility section, special for best cock or cockerel in fancy section, special for best Orpington in utility classes, also several first and second prizes in other breeds. SOME LAYER! A hen belonging to a farmer near Bordeaux laid an egg more than live inches in length, Th inches in circumference, and weighing 12oz. BIRDS OF THE AIR Five hundred pedigree day-old chicks and 1,000 eggs for setting recently left Croydon (England) aerodrome on the way to Madrid. A NEW JUDGE Although Mr. I. Ball, Grey Lynn, one of the judges appointed fqr the Onehunga Show, has for several'years been one of the most successful exhibitors of all varieties of Bantams, he has never previously officiated as judge. We feel sure Mr. Ball s experience as a breeder and exhibitor will be of valuable assistance in the placing of the awards at Onehunga. 9,000 EGGS FROM 134 BIRDS

The yield of eggs by 130 birds during the sixth month of the Clithero two-bird laying test was 2,061. The total eggs to date—entries originally numbered 134 birds—is B.SIO, and 71 laid outside the trap-nests. WHANGAREI EXHIBIT

At the Whangarei Show, which was held during last week, several Auckland exhibitors were very successful. Mr. W. A. Hanson’s Silver Wyandotte cock won the “John Jarvis” Honour Bowl for best utility bird in the show; also special for best male in utility section other than White Leghorn or Black Orpington. His Silver Wyandotte pullet was awarded the trophy for the best female in fancy classes.

Mr. J. H. Kissling’s Rhode Island Red hen was award the Club Shield for the best bird in the show of opposite sex to winner of Hoey Memorial Trophy; also special for best female in the utility section other than White Leghorn or Black Orpington. Mr. Roy Hanson’s Black Pekin Bantam hen gained the special for best old bird in the show. Mr. Eric J. R. McLaren won the special for best Bantam with a typical, well-drawn Birchen pullet. Mr. H. F. Winstone took first place in White Wyandotte pullets, also 2nd in White Wyandotte cockerels. In addition to his being awarded the Club Shield (for the third successive year) for the best bird in the show of opposite sex to winner of Hoey Memorial Trophy, Mr. J. H. Kissling captured every prize in both fancy and utility Rhode Island Reds, also first in utility White Wyandottes and third in Black Orpington pullets. Mr. T. Dowthwaite followed up his previous successes by annexing three first prizes in Runner ducks, also special for best duck and best drake in both fancy and utility sections. PALMERSTON SHOW We have received a copy of the schedule of the Manawatu Poultry Association’s 25 th Annual Show, which will be held in conjunction with the National Dairy Show, Palme: -ton North, on June 15, 16 and 17. The following championships will be competed for: Old English Game and Game Bantam, male or fem&fle. Yorkshire and Norwich Canaries (colour fed). Magpie Pigeon, Turbit Pigeon. In addition to a valuable prize list several special prizes have been allocated to the various classes, also the following challenge cups and trophies: The “Highden” Rose Bowl, value 20 gns., for best bird in the fancy poultry section, including duck classes. The “Wyandotte” Cup, value £ls 15s, for best bird in the Fancy Wyandotte classes. The “Jarvis” Rose Bowl, value 6gns, for most points in Fancy Heavy Breeds. The “Jarvis” Appreciation Trophy, value £ 5 ss, for most points in English Leghorns. The White Wyandotte Trophy, value £5 ss, for the most points in Fancy White Wyandottes. The “Palmer” Cup. value 10gns., for best bird in the utility classes. Messrs. Collinson and Sons’ Cup, value sgns., for most points in utility Leghorn classes. The “Palmer” Rose Bowl, value 10 gns., for best breeding pen in utility light breeds. The “Manawatu Flour Mills” Cup, for the best breeding pen in utility heavy breeds. The “Goldingham and Beckett” Cup, to be awarded to the best male or female in the utility light breeds. Minorca (utility) Fanciers’ Cup, value £5 ss, for best young bird in utility Black Minorca classes. The N.Z. Wyandotte Club: the N.Z. Game Club and the N.Z. Orpington Club will also hold their annual shows

in conjunction with the Manawatu Association, when the following trophies will be competed for: Champion Cup, value £2O, for best Wyandotte. Rutherford 12gn. Shield. Partridge Wyandotte 12gn. Shield.
