BY FIVE WICKETS

NEW ZEALAND BATTING FAILS SECOND INNINGS COLLAPSE CAMBRIDGE’S EASY WIN WITH 211 runs up and six wickets to fall, New Zealand was in a comfortable position in the match against Cambridge University. On the third day of play this advantage was lost—the New Zealand batting collapsed and the six wickets in hand fell for 54 runs in just over an hour. The Varsity batsmen, requiring 266 runs to win, captured the howling and made the necessary runs for the loss of five wickets.

By Cable. —Press a ssocvntion. —Copyright Reed. 8.50 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Cambridge’s later winning stand served to emphasise the surprise of ihe New Zealanders’ forenoon collapse. When the wicket was seemingly fairly good they lost six wickets for 54 in just over an hour. The hopes of James and Dempster staying till the risk of defeat was averted were shattered in the second over when James was taken in the slips. Merritt began to play a safe game

while Dempster met the bowling confidently, but an unlucky misunderstanding found both batsmen in the middle of the pitch. Cubbold ran out Dempster, w'ho had hit five four.

Dawson and Longrigg before lunch made light of the visitors’ attack and formed in the afternoon a brilliant partnership. Dawson hit 13 fours and had accounted for 107 runs out of 209 when Lowry rested the fast bowlers. Seabrook and Longfield speedily wiped off the deficit.
